How To Store Food For Long Term

In difficult times where the economy, natural disasters, food shortages, and other things threaten the stability of our homes and the availability of food; It is essential that we are sourcing and storing food to support our families with supplies and food for at least 3 to 6 months (and if possible for more). The Bible tells us in Matthew 25 the parable of the 10 virgins, where there were 5 of them who were prudent and kept more than enough supply to be able to wait and 5 who did not and at a certain time they ran out of what they had. As women of God you wise and prudent we have to make provision.

In this blog and video we share with you some techniques to save food for long term storage. Making use of Mylar oxygen-free sealing bags, plastic, and glass containers. Many of these items can be found at our local hardware store; or through Amazon.

Procedure to preserve rice by packaging it. This type of packaging allows the rice to last 10 to 15 years (or even longer).

Materials Needed:
40 pounds of rice
5 gallon bucket (sterilized with hot water)
Olive oil
Bay leaves
1 measuring spoon
Gloves
1 (5) Gallon Mylar bag
1 oxygen absorber 2000
A hair straightener

Procedure:

  1. Wash your hands well and put on gloves.
  2. Insert the Mylar bag into the bucket.
  3. Add to the bag 2 or 3 tablespoons of oil in the bottom.
  4. Grease the walls of the bag with oil.
  5. Pour rice
  6. For every 3 to 5 pounds of rice add 2 tablespoons of oil.
  7. Mix the rice well.
  8. When you reach the middle of the bucket place 5 bay leaves around the top.
  9. Continue the same procedure until finished.
  10. At the end add 5 more bay leaves to the top.
  11. Empty the air and seal the bag to just over half.
  12. Put on the oxygen absorber.
  13. Seal the rest of the opening.
  14. Seal the bucket well.

Here I also leave you the procedure to preserve beans or beans by packaging them. This type of packaging allows the beans to last 10 to 15 years (or even longer).

Materials Needed:

Approximately 30 pounds of beans or dry grains.
5 gallon bucket (sterilized with hot water)
Olive oil
Bay leaves
Peppercorns
1 measuring spoon
Gloves
1 (5) gallon Mylar bag
1 oxygen absorber 2000
A hair straightener

Procedure:

  1. Wash your hands well and put on gloves
  2. Insert the Mylar bag into the bucket.
  3. Add 2 or 3 tablespoons of oil into the bottom of the bag.
  4. Grease the walls of the bag with oil.
  5. Pour rice
  6. For every 3 pound package of beans, add 1 tablespoon of oil and three grains of pepper.
  7. Mix the beans well
  8. When you reach the middle of the bucket place 5 bay leaves around the top.
  9. Continue the same procedure until finished.
  10. At the end add 5 more bay leaves to the top.
  11. Empty the air and seal the bag to just over half.
  12. Put on the oxygen absorber.
  13. Seal the rest of the opening.
  14. Seal the pan (or bucket) well.

** Do not forget to remove the pepper and bay leaves when you go to cook**
