How to prepare your own bag with items from Amazon and the Dollar Tree

In the event there is an eminent natural disaster or other extraordinary event that would require you to abandon your home and run; what do you think you need to grab? Do you know where everything is? Do you even have what is needed? These are questions we should be asking ourselves before the emergency strikes. What are some of the items that are needed in a survival kit?

Here are some suggestions from the Red Cross Association:

  • Water (3 day supply)
  • Food (3 days supply)
  • Flashligt
  • Battery operated or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible)
  • Extra Batteries
  • First Aid Kit
  • Medications (7 day supply)
  • Multi-Purpose tool
  • Sanitation and personal hygiene items
  • Copies of personal documents, medication’s list, medical information, proof of address, passport, birth certificates, insurance policies, deeds, etc. Any important documents you want to have at least a copy in the event the originals get destroyed
  • Family Emergency Contact Information
  • Extra Cash (in the event there is no power to access the ATM machines)
  • Emergency blanket
  • Maps of the area
  • Games and activities for children
  • Manual can opener

Additional items that we believe would be good to have:

  • Diagnostic equipment (thermometer, glucose meter, pressure meter, pulse, etc.)
  • Whistle
  • N95 or surgical masks
  • Gas mask
  • Matches/Fire Starters
  • Rain gear
  • Towels
  • Work gloves
  • Tools/supplies for securing your home
  • Extra clothing, hat and sturdy shoes
  • Plastic bags
  • Duct tape
  • Rope
  • Fork / Spoon
  • Scissors
  • Household Disinfectant / wipes
  • Entertainment items
  • Blankets or sleeping bags
  • Knife (combo)
  • Portable shovel
  • Cell phone
  • Solar power device charger
  • Wood burning stove
  • Gloves
  • Sanitizer
  • Sewing Kit
  • Water purifying option
  • Sharpening File
  • Taser/ Pepper Spray (something to defend your self with)
  • Ax (not necessarily inside the Back Pack)

Most of this items can be found at your local Dollar Tree or through Amazon. It may take you some time to get everything the way you want it, but it is worth it.
